Factory Music Venue Mural

Mels first public mural was created for the Factory music venue in barnstaple. It was a huge public surface, and had to reflect the energy of the events that were staged there. We plan to make large prints of this mural available from the purchase section soon.

Mel was commisioned via the college to design and paint a mural in the main area of the Factory music venue. It was a 2 1/2 by 6 meter board visible both from the stage and the stalls.

Steady Progress

Mel was given free reign to create a modern, vivid mural. She decided to create one which was full of movement and vibrant colours to best fit the venue. The design was a mixture of several other peices Mel had recently completed which the owners of the venue liked. These seperate images were then mashed up into one flowing mural scene.

Painting

The complex geometry encirlcing the top and bottom of the mural was created using a tape mask carefully applied to the board and emulsion applied on top. This gives the mural a surreal perspective - when standing in front of this mural it is easy to lose grip on perspective and feel like you are being dragged into the peice.

Construction

All the painting and outlining was carefully done by hand and no spray paints were used, making the mural take around 50 hours to complete. The mural was finished on the night of a performance by the Asian Dub Foundation - who talked to Mel while she finished it off, and loved the mural.
